Honda’s MotoGP programme has entered 2026 with renewed optimism, reporting tangible progress after several challenging seasons and setting clear goals for the year ahead. The Japanese manufacturer, once dominant in premier class racing, struggled to compete consistently in recent years but now believes its development efforts are beginning to yield results.
HRC team manager Alberto Puig said that while improvements have been incremental rather than revolutionary, the areas the team focused on have delivered meaningful gains. The updated Honda RC213V now feels better overall, with the engine performing more strongly and the bike carrying less weight, contributing to a more competitive package as the new season approaches.
Test sessions during the off‑season underscored these gains. During the official Sepang Test in Malaysia, factory rider Joan Mir expressed confidence in the bike and its direction. He described the 2026 machine as the best version he has ridden since joining Honda, noting that despite remaining work on grip and balance, the overall feel has improved significantly. Mir also topped the timesheet on the second day of testing, finishing fifth overall with a competitive lap time that highlighted the team’s progress.

Honda’s upswing is not limited to testing. The 2025 season saw several strong results that hinted at a turnaround, including a victory for Johann Zarco at the French Grand Prix and podium finishes for Mir at circuits such as Motegi and Sepang. These performances helped Honda achieve promotion from D to C rank under MotoGP’s concession system, reflecting substantial gains in constructor points compared to previous years.
Puig also made it clear that the team’s immediate target is to return to the top step of the podium as soon as possible. He acknowledged that rivals like Ducati and Aprilia still appear strong but said Honda’s recent gains show they can compete at the sharp end when opportunities arise.
Both Mir and team‑mate Luca Marini remain committed to further development throughout the season. Marini, who extended his contract into 2026, has spoken publicly about high expectations for the year based on the steps the team has taken and the positive momentum built over the past season.
As the grid prepares for the opening rounds of the 2026 championship, Honda looks set to be a more competitive presence. The improvements in bike performance and testing results have raised hopes within the team and among fans that the factory could once again become a regular contender for podiums and race wins.
