National coach Kenneth Jonassen explained that leaving out Leong Jun Hao was a tactical decision aimed at rotation and squad balance during Malaysia’s tight Thomas Cup tie.

The decision to leave out national singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao during Malaysia’s recent team outing was made purely for tactical reasons, according to national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen.

Jonassen clarified that the selection call was part of a broader strategy to rotate players and test squad depth, rather than any performance-related issue. The move, however, proved to be closely contested in outcome as Malaysia were pushed in a tight encounter against England.

Malaysia eventually secured a narrow 3-2 victory, with senior shuttler Lee Zii Jia playing a key role by delivering a composed performance in the deciding match.

Jonassen acknowledged that while the strategy nearly backfired, it was designed to explore different combinations and prepare the squad for future rounds of competition. He also stressed the importance of giving opportunities to multiple players within the team structure.

The coaching director expressed mixed reflections on the overall performance, praising the experienced players for stepping up while noting areas for improvement among younger members of the squad.

The tactical rotation, particularly in the singles lineup, is expected to continue being a feature of Malaysia’s approach as they progress deeper into the competition.
