KTM has expressed strong confidence in Maverick Viñales despite his challenging start to the 2026 MotoGP season, backing the Spaniard to recover and establish himself as a central figure within the team.
Viñales has endured a disrupted campaign so far, highlighted by his withdrawal from the United States Grand Prix due to complications linked to a previous shoulder injury. A screw inserted after his Sachsenring crash became loose, causing significant pain and forcing him out of competition.
The setback added to an already difficult opening phase of the season, with the 10-time grand prix winner failing to score points in the early rounds. In contrast, teammate Pedro Acosta has emerged as a consistent front-runner, regularly challenging for podium finishes and taking on a clear leadership role within the squad.
Despite the disparity in results, KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer believes Viñales’ struggles are largely down to misfortune rather than a lack of performance. He remains convinced that the Spaniard can still fulfil the expectations set when he joined the team from Aprilia.
Pre-season testing had indicated that Viñales was back to full fitness, raising hopes that he could replicate the strong form he showed prior to his 2025 injury. KTM maintains that once fully recovered, he has the capability to step up as a “second leader” alongside Acosta, strengthening the team’s overall competitiveness.
The Austrian manufacturer’s long-term vision relies on having two riders capable of leading development and delivering results. While Acosta has taken early control, the team believes a fully fit and settled Viñales will provide crucial balance, both in performance and technical feedback.
For now, KTM’s focus remains on supporting Viñales through his recovery and helping him regain momentum. If he can return to his previous level, the team expects to transform its current one-sided dynamic into a more formidable two-pronged challenge on the grid.
