Malaysian badminton fans received troubling news as Lee Zii Jia missed the national team’s opening training session for the Thomas Cup. The 28-year-old, recovering from a challenging season plagued by ankle and back issues, is now sidelined by a new injury, leaving his participation in the April 24 to May 3 tournament in Denmark uncertain.
Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) was buzzing with activity, but Zii Jia’s absence was immediately noticeable. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed a minor injury, highlighting the difficulty the former World No. 8 has faced this year. His season has been marked by inconsistency, early exits in five of six tournaments, and a steep drop in world ranking to No. 80.
BAM President Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz commented on the situation, noting that the team is awaiting updates on when Zii Jia can resume training. His fitness and form will be a critical factor in selecting Malaysia’s final 10-player squad for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup finals, scheduled to be announced next week.
Zii Jia’s talent and experience make him a key asset, but his injury adds uncertainty to Malaysia’s medal prospects. Beyond the Thomas Cup, BAM is also focused on the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya later this year, emphasizing the importance of ensuring Zii Jia’s long-term recovery and return to peak performance.
With the clock ticking, Malaysian badminton fans are hoping for a speedy recovery for their star player, whose presence could be decisive both in Denmark and at future major tournaments.
