Malaysia’s hopes for a strong showing at the upcoming Malaysia Masters have been complicated by injury concerns surrounding several key players, raising uncertainty just days before the Super 500 event begins in Kuala Lumpur.
National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky has admitted that fitness issues could force last-minute changes, with some players still not fully ready for competition. The situation has left the coaching team carefully assessing options ahead of the May 19 to 24 tournament.
One of the main concerns is the condition of Man Wei Chong, who is still recovering and may not be fit in time for the home event. His availability remains uncertain as the medical team continues to monitor his progress.

Women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah are also under close observation, with Pearly continuing her recovery from a back injury that previously forced her out of major team events. Her condition is being evaluated on a day-to-day basis, with no final decision confirmed yet.
Rexy explained that player fitness will be the deciding factor, and withdrawals may be necessary if individuals are not fully ready, not only for the Malaysia Masters but also the following week’s Singapore Open.
Last year’s Malaysia Masters saw strong home performances, including Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun winning the men’s doubles title, a result that raised expectations for another successful campaign this time around.
However, Rexy stressed that the focus now is on recovery and readiness rather than results, adding that the coaching team also wants other players to step up if key names are unable to compete.
He acknowledged that relying too heavily on top performers is not sustainable, and the current situation presents an opportunity for backups to prove themselves in front of home fans.
With the tournament approaching quickly, Malaysia’s final lineup will depend heavily on late fitness assessments, leaving home supporters waiting anxiously to see which players will ultimately take the court in Kuala Lumpur.
