Naomi Osaka revived a fashion favorite Monday night at the Garden Cup, bringing back the Nike “Lolita goth” look she first wore at the 2024 US Open for her matchup against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
The four-time Grand Slam champion initially turned heads last summer with a ruffled, bow-adorned outfit from a collaboration between Nike and Ambush designer Yoon Ahn, winning in a chartreuse version but falling short in black-and-white. “When I put on the outfit it’s almost like a super suit, so I try to channel that,” Osaka said at the time.
She has since made the style part of her signature, even incorporating elements into her unreleased 2025 US Open Labubu kit. Ahead of her second clash with Sabalenka this week — after pushing the reigning US Open champion to a match tiebreaker at the Atlanta Cup on Saturday — Osaka hinted at the return on Instagram with the caption: “Tonight NY 🗽.”
True to her tease, Osaka took the Madison Garden court in her signature bows, earning a smile from longtime Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who oversaw the coin toss.
Osaka and Sabalenka followed a three-set contest between Tommy Paul and Nick Kyrgios, which Paul won 10-5 in the match tiebreaker. Despite her stylish appearance, Osaka was unable to overcome Sabalenka, falling 6-4, 7-5.
