NASCAR has once more delayed the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray, moving the event to Wednesday.

What was meant to be a high-octane start to the NASCAR season at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem has instead turned into a prolonged waiting game. Historic snowfall across North Carolina has forced NASCAR to postpone its pre-season exhibition race yet again.

A powerful “bomb cyclone” dumped nearly a foot of snow across the region, making the original Saturday and Sunday schedule impossible. NASCAR first condensed the Cook Out Clash into a single-day event on Sunday, then pushed it to Monday. Now, with lingering snow and ice still causing widespread disruption, the event has been officially rescheduled for Wednesday.

While skies have cleared, much of the region remains affected by icy, and impassable roads as temperatures continue to fluctuate above and below freezing. Although NASCAR crews have already worked to clear the track itself, ensuring safe travel for fans, teams, and officials remains the primary concern.

“Due to the impacts of historic winter weather across the North Carolina region, the #CookOutClash has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Feb. 4,” a statement from the track read. “NASCAR is continuing to work closely with the City of Winston-Salem and NC Department of Transportation. We appreciate your patience as we work toward hosting a safe event.”

Beyond the Flakes: Why the Wednesday Delay Was Crucial

NASCAR has emphasized that safety remains the top priority as the state slowly thaws. Even with clearer weather, icy conditions persist overnight, creating hazardous travel conditions throughout Winston-Salem and surrounding areas.

NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Venue & Racing Innovation Officer Ben Kennedy underscored the gravity of the situation.

“Mother Nature threw everything at us, but safety always comes first,” Kennedy stated. “The Clash will now run Wednesday, giving the city time to focus on community needs and ensuring a safer trip for fans and teams. Our crews are working nonstop to get Bowman Gray ready. See you at The Madhouse!”

This decision also allows local authorities additional time to focus on community recovery efforts before reopening access to the iconic short track.

Your Wednesday Race Day Blueprint: Schedule and Weather Outlook

According to AccuWeather, temperatures are expected to gradually rise, with highs of 39°F on Monday, 43°F on Tuesday, and 44°F on Wednesday. However, overnight temperatures will continue to dip below freezing, and there remains a chance of showers on the newly scheduled race day, factors that could still complicate conditions.

While NASCAR continues preparations at Bowman Gray Stadium, large portions of North Carolina remain at a standstill, reinforcing the need for patience as the region recovers.

For NASCAR fans eager to see engines finally fire up at The Madhouse, the wait has been frustrating, but the finish line is now in sight.
