KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin secured a morale-boosting first-round win at the Malaysia Open on Tuesday, impressing coach Nova Widianto.

The world No. 21 stunned Denmark's world No. 12 Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje 20-22, 21-18, 21-17 in a 72-minute battle at the Axiata Arena on Tuesday, snapping a two-match losing streak against the Danes.

Su Yin said the victory carried extra meaning as it was their first win at the Super 1000 tournament since their debut last year.

"I am very satisfied and happy because this is our first win playing in Malaysia," she said.

"I hope to keep this momentum."

The pair struggled last season and faced a potential split after Nova hinted in November that he would reshuffle underperforming pairs.

This win likely buys them time to seek better results.

Pang Ron-Su Yin dropped the first game after leading 20-19 because they were too eager to close the set.

They steadied themselves by focusing on their play rather than the noise from the fans.

"I didn't think too much about it. I just focused on playing one point after the other without pressure," said Su Yin.

"I also want to thank my partner and coach who kept telling me 'it's okay, we can do this one by one'."

Pang Ron fed off the atmosphere inside the packed arena, cutting an animated figure as the Malaysians edged ahead.

"One of the reasons I was excited was because it's our home ground," he said.

"I wanted to prove that I'm still here. I'm very happy to have won today."

The win sets up a second-round meeting against either compatriots Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei or Indonesia's Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu.

"We'll have to see," Pang Ron added.

"But I hope we will at least have one pair that makes it to the quarter-finals."
