KUALA LUMPUR: Women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah earned RM1.49 million (US$364,915) in prize money this season, underpinned by a consistent run on the BWF World Tour.

The world No. 2 could have reached the RM2.5 million mark had they won the lucrative World Tour Finals (WTF) in Hangzhou, which concluded on Sunday.

A first title at the event would have earned them US$252,000 (about RM1.03 million) — the highest prize money offered by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

However, a hectic schedule of 18 World Tour events took its toll, with Pearly-Thinaah earning US$60,000 (RM245,000) after reaching the semi-finals on Saturday.

Despite the defeat to Japan's Mayu Matsumoto-Yuki Fukushima, the WTF prize money remained their largest single-tournament payout of the year.

Beyond financial gains, Pearly-Thinaah won titles at the Thailand Open, Arctic Open, and Kumamoto Masters, all of which are Super 500 events.

Their season included five quarter-finals, five semi-finals, and three finals.

Their only early exits in the 18-tournament circuit were a second-round defeat at the Denmark Open and a first-round loss at the Malaysia Open in January.

The pair also won silver at the World Championships in Paris in August.

Given their current form, the duo is well-positioned to break the RM2 million prize money barrier next year.
