The upcoming MotoGP season faces uncertainty as the Qatar Grand Prix may not take place as scheduled on April 12. CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta cited the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a major challenge for hosting the race at the Lusail International Circuit. While a replacement venue is not being considered, rescheduling later in the season remains a possibility.
Ezpeleta emphasized that Dorna Sports is focused solely on the Qatar circuit and will explore alternate dates if necessary. This situation follows the World Endurance Championship’s recent postponement of its Qatar race and raises concerns for other Middle East motorsport events, including Formula 1 races in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

In addition to Qatar, significant changes are coming to the Australian leg of the MotoGP calendar. The iconic Phillip Island circuit will be replaced by a new track in Adelaide. Ezpeleta described the Adelaide venue as “a safe race, not a street race,” highlighting its city-center location with modern safety features. The move is designed to bring MotoGP closer to fans while maintaining strict safety standards.
Phillip Island, despite its historic status, was removed from the calendar due to safety concerns, including unpredictable wind and rain. Ezpeleta stressed that rider safety is the top priority, comparing the decision to the exclusion of Suzuka as a MotoGP venue for similar reasons.
Looking ahead, MotoGP plans to continue expanding into urban locations. Circuits like Goiania and Buenos Aires demonstrate the sport’s strategy of hosting events near population centers to increase fan engagement. However, Ezpeleta ruled out the possibility of a Madrid street race, noting that safety requirements are not met in the Spanish capital.
By balancing tradition with innovation and safety, MotoGP is reshaping its calendar to ensure riders and fans alike can enjoy the sport without compromise.
