Track modifications at Sachsenring aim to improve rider safety following last year’s Moto2 collision, with key changes to run-off areas and drainage now underway.

The Sachsenring is undergoing a series of safety upgrades ahead of this year’s German MotoGP, as organisers respond to concerns raised after a major Moto2 incident in 2025.

Construction work began recently and is expected to last around seven weeks, focusing on improving key risk areas around the circuit. Officials say only targeted changes are required, but they are considered important for enhancing rider safety.

One of the main updates involves replacing sections of grass run-off with asphalt. This change is designed to give riders better control when they run wide, reducing the risk of losing grip and rejoining the track unpredictably.

The decision follows a serious Moto2 collision involving Diogo Moreira and David Alonso at Turn 3. The incident occurred after Moreira ran wide and rejoined the racing line at low speed, where he was struck from behind by Alonso.

Further improvements are also being made at high-speed sections of the circuit, including the fast left-hander known as Sachsen Kurve. In addition, drainage systems are being upgraded to prevent issues similar to those seen at other wet races this season, while access points for marshals are being expanded to improve response times.

The project is estimated to cost around €300,000, with financial support from local authorities.

Sachsenring remains a key fixture on the MotoGP calendar, with its current contract running until at least 2031. This year’s German Grand Prix is scheduled for July 10 to 12, just before the championship’s summer break.

The upgrades reflect ongoing efforts to adapt traditional circuits to the increasing performance and speed of modern MotoGP machines, ensuring safety standards continue to evolve alongside the sport.
