World No. 6 men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun are approaching the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China with renewed determination after another late exit at a major event.
The Malaysian duo’s run at the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships ended in the quarter‑finals last week in Birmingham, marking their fourth last‑eight finish of the season following similar results at the Malaysian Open, Indian Open and Indonesian Masters. While they did break a string of first‑round defeats at the All‑England, the inability to push beyond the quarter‑final stage has become a recurring theme this year.
With the Asia Championships scheduled for April 7‑12, Wei Chong and Kai Wun aim to turn that trend around and claim a medal. “We’ve reached several quarter‑finals this year but haven’t made a semi‑final yet,” Kai Wun said, adding that he hopes this tournament will be different and that they can go further and possibly win a medal.
The pair know there is work to be done in the lead‑up to the event. They plan to focus on reducing mistakes and sharpening their overall game in the three weeks before play begins. This tournament offers a key opportunity to test their progress and build confidence ahead of next year’s Olympic qualification period.
In previous editions of the Asia Championships, Wei Chong and Kai Wun have struggled to reach the later rounds, providing extra motivation to make a deeper run this time.
Meanwhile, Wei Chong also faces the challenge of managing a knee issue as he prepares for the event, hoping that strengthening his leg will help maintain his performance and avoid surgery ahead of the championship.
As they set their sights on podium success in Ningbo, the Malaysian men’s doubles pair are aiming to combine improved consistency with better physical preparation to finally break through the quarter‑final barrier.
