Johann Zarco delivered a solid performance to finish eighth in Saturday’s Sprint at the Circuito de Jerez Ángel Nieto, securing valuable points for LCR Honda.
The Frenchman impressed early in the day by topping Q1 to advance into Q2, before narrowly missing out on pole position to claim a front-row start in second place. Reflecting on his early pace, Zarco said, “It was cool! I’m happy with the start.”
He carried that momentum into the Sprint, making a strong launch and battling at the front during the opening laps. Running close behind Marc Márquez, Zarco showed competitive pace but struggled to maintain ground in certain sections of the track.
“The first lap behind Marc was good, but then I was losing time in the fast corners. It was tough to try to catch them in other places, and I couldn’t go any faster. It was good to fight,” he explained.
The race took a turn when wet conditions were declared late on, forcing riders into a critical decision on when to switch bikes. While others pitted, Zarco hesitated and remained on track longer than ideal, a choice he later admitted may have cost him a stronger result.
“Then, when the rain came, I hesitated about going in, but with seven riders on track, I stayed, and I should have come in. I believe I missed an opportunity there, but at the same time, it was difficult,” he said.
Despite the setback, Zarco eventually switched bikes and pushed to the finish, crossing the line in eighth place. Considering his front-row start and the challenging conditions, he remained positive about the outcome.
“In any case, taking a front row start in the morning and finishing in the points considering the whole situation, it’s a good result.”
Zarco now turns his focus to Sunday’s main race with cautious optimism.
“Let’s see tomorrow!”
