KTM has strengthened its future MotoGP plans with the return of key engine designer Kurt Trieb, who is set to play a major role in the brand’s 850cc development programme for the next technical era of MotoGP.
According to KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer, Trieb’s comeback is seen internally as a significant positive step, with the team describing the move as beneficial on all fronts. Trieb had previously left KTM for Honda in 2025 but is now back to lead development work on the Austrian manufacturer’s next-generation engine project.
Beirer stressed there was no tension surrounding Trieb’s departure or return, explaining that his short stint away was part of normal career progression for a highly sought-after technical figure. He added that Trieb remains highly respected within the organisation and continues to play a key role in shaping KTM’s power unit direction.
The engineer will now resume a leading position in the development of KTM’s upcoming 850cc engine, which is central to the brand’s preparations for the 2027 regulations. His previous work is already embedded in the project, even though he was not present during the earliest track testing phase.
KTM believes his return adds stability and expertise at a crucial stage, as manufacturers continue accelerating development ahead of MotoGP’s next major technical reset.
