Malaysia’s preparations for the upcoming Thomas Cup have been strengthened by the return of independent star Lee Zii Jia, who has officially committed to representing the country in the prestigious team event. His decision comes at a crucial time as Malaysia looks to end a title drought that dates back to 1992.
Youth and Sports Minister Taufiq Johari welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step towards greater unity between independent professionals and players under the Badminton Association of Malaysia. He expressed confidence that combining both groups will provide Malaysia with the depth and balance needed to mount a serious challenge when the tournament takes place in Horsens, Denmark.
Taufiq thanked Lee and his team for agreeing to work together in pursuit of restoring Malaysia’s former glory in the Thomas Cup, which the nation last won more than three decades ago. He emphasised that the move reflects strong patriotism and a shared commitment to national success, particularly in a team competition where collective spirit often proves decisive.
Discussions involving BAM leadership were held to ensure alignment and cooperation, reinforcing the belief that a united front offers Malaysia its best chance of success. With Lee back in the national setup and preparations intensifying, hopes are rising that this renewed collaboration can finally deliver the long-awaited breakthrough and return the Thomas Cup to Malaysian hands.
