Despite strong form in testing, Dani Pedrosa has ruled out a MotoGP comeback, forcing Tech3 to look beyond its veteran test rider for a replacement for Maverick Viñales.

Speculation around a potential MotoGP return for Dani Pedrosa has been put to rest, with the veteran confirming he will not replace Maverick Viñales at the upcoming French Grand Prix.

With Viñales sidelined due to an ongoing shoulder injury and fellow test rider Pol Espargaró also unavailable, KTM faced a shortage of options. Pedrosa, currently serving as a test and development rider, appeared to be a logical stand-in given his recent strong pace during post-race testing at Jerez.

However, the three-time world champion has made it clear that a competitive return is no longer part of his plans. He has stated that his racing chapter is effectively closed, expressing contentment with his current role behind the scenes and acknowledging that opportunities should now go to younger riders.

Beyond personal preference, practical considerations also play a role. Pedrosa’s current contract structure with KTM, shaped during a period of financial tightening, offers fewer incentives for race appearances. While not the main reason, it reinforces his decision to step away from active competition.

As a result, KTM’s satellite outfit Tech3 has opted for an alternative solution, calling up former rider Jonas Folger to fill the vacant seat at Le Mans. Folger’s prior experience with the team and familiarity with MotoGP machinery made him a practical choice under tight circumstances.

The situation highlights both the limitations of relying on test riders for emergency replacements and Pedrosa’s firm stance on retirement. While his speed remains evident, his focus is now firmly on development work rather than returning to the pressures of race weekends.
