Quitting not in our DNA, say veteran pair Soon Huat-Shevon

KUALA LUMPUR: Quitting has never been part of Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai's DNA, and retirement remains far from the veteran mixed doubles pair's thoughts as they gear up for another demanding World Tour season next year.
At 35 and 32 respectively, the independent pair continue to defy age, staying competitive against the world's elite and even reaching a career-high world No. 3 ranking in February.
Although they did not win a World Tour title this year, Soon Huat-Shevon enjoyed a solid campaign, making 10 quarter-final appearances and reaching the semi-finals of the Malaysia Open and India Open.
Despite the physical toll of a long season, the world No. 9 have remained inside the top 10 for the past 12 months, a testament to their determination and refusal to fade quietly against younger rivals.
Shevon, reflecting on their season in an Instagram post, admitted the year took a heavy toll both mentally and physically.
"We could not finish 2025 on a high note, but I am still proud of how far we have come," she wrote.
"It hit me harder personally this year as both of us fought through a tremendously tough season of burnout and physical exhaustion.
"At 35 (Soon Huat) and 32 respectively, it has been incredibly tough for us to compete in 22 events in a year, but we still achieved our goal of qualifying for the World Tour Finals (WTF)."
Shevon added that the pair's journey as professional players has been far from smooth.
"It has been almost five years since we turned professional, facing constant challenges, unseen battles and the need to adapt to a new reality.
"We have had to pick ourselves up after every fall and continue pushing forward despite the odds.
"Those who have followed us closely would know this wasn't our best year, but we are grateful for the support that kept us going.
"We don't know how much longer this journey will last, but we will keep going as far as possible and make the most of every step by learning, growing and enjoying the ride together."
The pair competed at the WTF in Hangzhou last week but exited at the group stage.
However, they have already turned their focus to the new season, beginning preparations for the Malaysia Open, including a training session on Christmas Day, determined to make a strong start and prove that age remains just a number.
