KUALA LUMPUR: Is shuttler Pearly Tan OK?
That was the concern raised by fans on social media following an Instagram picture of women's doubles star Pearly on a hospital bed.
The picture was accompanied by a message, dated Jan 1, 2026, from Pearly that read: "Life comes with both good and bad moments. But I'm truly grateful I get (want) to finish this tournament on my home ground, I will recover well, That's my wish and fight back next."
And in a repost, Pearly said: "Thanks to all the fans for coming all the way to support us on our home ground. I'm sorry we couldn't give you more days to watch us play, but I'm truly grateful for all the love and support. Love you guys, and I can't wait to see you all again."
The repost came after Pearly and doubles partner M. Thinaah suffered a shock 26-24, 21-17 defeat against Indonesia's world No. 60 Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma–Meilysa Trias Puspitasari in the Malaysia Open last 16 at the Axiata Arena on Thursday.
National coaching director Rexy Mainaky addressed the fans' concern by saying that Pearly was hospitalised last week with fever but recovered for the Malaysia Open.
"The picture she posted on Instagram was five days before the Malaysia Open started and not after yesterday's match. She had fever then and was hospitalised but recovered fast," said Rexy.
"They will bounce back and will also play in the India Open next week."
The picture possibly gave an idea why Pearly-Thinaah struggled at the Malaysia Open.
