KUALA LUMPUR: South Korea's women's singles player An Se Young is simply unbeatable.
The world No. 1 defeated China's world No. 2 Wang Zhi Yi 21-15, 24-22 for her third consecutive Malaysia Open title at Axiata Arena today. Her victory earned her US$101,500 (RM413,257).
The 23-year-old the Olympic champion produced a stirring comeback in the second game to secure her first title of the year.
Se Young trailed 9-17 and 13-19 in the second game, but calmly reeled off point after point, once again displaying the mental steel that has become her trademark.
"I don't give up. I always trust myself and just do it," said Se Young after the final.
That belief has powered an extraordinary run of success that stretches back to last year's Denmark Open, with the Malaysia Open marking her fifth consecutive title.
The latest win extended the Korean star's dominance over Zhi Yi to 17-4 head-to-head. It was Zhi Yi's eighth straight defeat in a final to Se Young since last year.
"I always match her (Zhi Yi). I focus on my style, I'm confident and I just play my style," said Se Young.
In the women's doubles final, China's world No. 1 Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning reclaimed their Malaysia Open title. The 2024 champions defeated South Korea's world No. 6 Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee 21-18, 21-12.
