Toprak Razgatlioglu’s highly anticipated MotoGP debut at the Sepang International Circuit highlighted the challenges of transitioning from WorldSBK to the premier class. The former Superbike champion completed the three-day pre-season test 18th on the combined timesheets, nearly two seconds off the fastest rider, Alex Marquez, and eight-tenths behind top Yamaha rider Alex Rins.
The results underscored the difficulty of adapting his aggressive WorldSBK riding style to the Yamaha M1. Known for his daring stoppies and sharp cornering, Razgatlioglu struggled with throttle control and fast corners. "I'm angry because the lap times just aren't there," he admitted. "When I open the throttle, the rear tyre starts sliding and doesn't stop, and that makes it hard to turn."
In response, he has requested adjustments to the bike, including a wider handlebar and a greater reliance on the rear end, and has even removed rear winglets temporarily to better manage the machine.

Despite the early setbacks, Razgatlioglu has shown a refreshing level of honesty and humility. "It's not easy for me to see myself so far down, especially after Superbikes. The first five races will be tough; I'm going to suffer," he said openly. This candor, combined with his raw talent, has earned respect within the paddock, with Yamaha management and Pramac team officials praising his character and professionalism.
Yamaha remains committed to Razgatlioglu’s long-term potential. Reports suggest he is already being considered for a factory M1 seat in 2027, potentially alongside Jorge Martin. Industry insiders note that while his adaptation will take time, his speed and natural riding ability make him a promising prospect for the future.
History shows that WorldSBK champions can make the jump successfully, with riders like Ben Spies eventually achieving race wins and strong championship results in MotoGP. Razgatlioglu’s journey will require patience, resilience, and continued learning. The Sepang test was only the beginning, and fans can expect a challenging but exciting rookie season as he works to unlock his full potential in the premier class.
