Bagnaia’s departure from Ducati Corse follows months of uncertainty. His management began exploring alternatives after indications that Ducati could be targeting Pedro Acosta as a long-term prospect. The possibility of losing his place in the factory setup prompted Bagnaia to consider options early.
An offer from Yamaha Motor Racing was on the table, but concerns over the competitiveness of the 2026 M1 and the presence of Jorge Martin made the move less appealing. Sharing the garage with Martin for multiple seasons was not seen as an ideal scenario.
Aprilia ultimately secured Bagnaia with a long-term project. Despite reportedly offering less financially than Yamaha, the Italian manufacturer presented a four-year contract with built-in stability and a clear leadership role. A major factor in that decision is Acosta. Widely regarded as one of the sport’s brightest young talents, the Spaniard has expressed strong interest in working with Gabarrini. The two are believed to share a good relationship, and Ducati sees Acosta as a potential cornerstone of its future project.
